If Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock hoped to repeat the success of Fiddler on the Roof, their entry into the 1970 season was a disappointment. Critics and theatergoers could identify with a poor Jewish milkman trying to marry off his five daughters, but couldn’t warm up to a man and his five sons scattering across Europe to create a powerful banking empire. Yet the score Harnick and Bock wrote for the new project was replete with tunes which continue to grab one’s attention. The Rothschilds opened in October 1970 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre and closed after 505 performances.
