The explosive return in November 2000 of the long-running 1973 British musical showed that New York was ready to embrace Richard O’Brien’s zany spoof of 1950s horror flicks. The doomed lovers seeking refuge in the castle on a stormy night were Alice Ripley as Janet and Jarrod Emick as Brad; other castle denizens were Raúl Esparza as Riff Raff, rock singer Joan Jett as Columbia, comedian Lea DeLaria as Eddie/Dr. Scott, and Daphne Rubin-Vega as Magenta. Tom Hewitt gave an over-the-top performance as Frank N Furter; Dick Cavett hosted. The fun would probably have lasted much longer than 356 performances, but 9/11 dealt the show a fatal blow.
