The King and I 1964 Lincoln Center revival
The lavish revival of the story of Anna Leonowens and the King of Siam came to the Music Theatre of Lincoln Center in July 1964, produced by its own composer, Richard Rodgers. A huge orchestra played the familiar score, and the two principals – Risë Stevens as the British governess and Darren McGavin as the stubborn King – gave their all in roles that seemed to have been written for them. The limited engagement of 40 performances was sold out, but an anticipated move to Broadway never happened. First LP release: August 1964.
