A sprawling musical set during the Civil War, based on the 1965 film starring James Stewart, opened at the Alvin Theatre in January 1975 for a long run of 1,050 performances. James Lee Barrett, who had written the screenplay, adapted the book with Philip Rose and Peter Udell, with Udell and composer Gary Geld creating the score. As the pacifist Virginia landowner who refuses to take sides in the conflict splitting the country until his own family is torn apart, John Cullum made a striking portrayal that earned him a Tony Award as Best Actor in a Musical.
