[P] 1976, BMG Entertainment / 14 tracks
Richard Rodgers and Sheldon Harnick’s story of Henry VIII of England and his tumultuous love life, as detailed in Sherman Yellen’s literate book, might have been a regal pageant on paper but failed to ignite on stage. It opened at the Lunt-Fontanne in April 1978 for a limited run that ended after only 49 performances. It had the enormous merits, however, of presenting Nicol Williamson in the title role, with Penny Fuller playing Anne Boleyn in the first act and Anne’s daughter Elizabeth in the second. Newcomer Glenn Close was impressive as Princess Mary.
