℗ 1996 BMG Music / 21 tracks
Based on E.L. Doctorow’s celebrated epic novel, Ragtime wove together three American tales – that of a stifled upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant, and a daring young Harlem musician – united by their courage, compassion, and belief in the promise of the future. Historical figures – escape artist Harry Houdini, auto tycoon Henry Ford, educator Booker T. Washington, entertainer Evelyn Nesbitt – offered guidance and diversion. Terrence McNally provided the narrative set to music by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. RCA’s studio recording, released in 1996, was a prelude to the Broadway opening two years later, also marked by a cast album with essentially the same principals.
