Husband and wife Jack Cassidy and Shirley Jones had never appeared together in a Broadway musical until they were offered the leads in Maggie Flynn, which opened at the ANTA Theatre in October 1968. The work of Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore and George David Weiss, it dealt with the efforts of an Irish woman to protect her orphanage during the Civil War draft riots. The story seemed spotty at times, the songs lacked the pizzazz usually associated with Broadway musicals, and the show was unable to hold its own against the novelty aspect of Hair or the historical pull of 1776, which would win the Tony that year. In spite of the radiant Shirley Jones in the title role, it closed after 82 performances.
