A cheerful musical, with a book by Neil Simon, music by Cy Coleman, and lyrics by Carolyn Leigh, brought to the Broadway stage one of television’s most beloved comedians, Sid Caesar. The nonsensical story, based on Patrick Dennis’s mock biography Belle Poitrine: The Intimate Memoirs of the Great Star of Stage, Screen and Television, centered around the rise and fall (several times over) of the buxom title character, whose encounters with various males (seven of them played by Caesar) led to many misadventures. The show opened to great fanfare at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in November 1962 and had a total run of 257 performances.
