The exuberant Australian Peter Allen, who had been “discovered” by Liza Minnelli, took Broadway by storm with this “almost totally fictitious musical hystery” opening in December 1988 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre. The book, by Harvey Fierstein and Charles Suppon, based on the film The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond, centered on the notorious Depression-era gangster with ambitions to make it big in show business. Theatergoers mostly remembered the presence of Julie Wilson as the owner of a speakeasy where Legs gets a job when he returns from prison to civilian life. In spite of its many assets, the show had difficulties surviving the winter season and closed after 64 performances.
