Based on the original play by Jean Poiret, this musical extravaganza with a book adapted by Harvey Fierstein and a score composed by Jerry Herman won the Tony for Best Musical in 1984. The fragile relationship of Renato and Zaza, the owners of a highly successful gay night club in St. Tropez, where Zaza is the headliner in a transvestite revue, is threatened when Renato’s son (from a “mistake” 20 years earlier) brings his fiancée to meet his father, with the girl’s ultra-conservative parents in tow. With Gene Barry and George Hearn in the leads, the musical opened in August 1983 at the Palace Theatre, and ran for 1,761 performances. It also yielded a powerful anthem to gay pride in the song, “I Am What I Am.”
