Originally released 1949, 1952 SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT / 15 tracks
Among the first of the “studio cast” albums that Columbia producer Goddard Lieberson and music director Lehman Engel began to work on in 1951 was Girl Crazy with Mary Martin. Because the recordings didn’t presume to be faithful representations of the actual shows, but “covers” to preserve their most enduring themes, Martin performed the score’s juiciest tunes including, oddly enough, “Bidin’ My Time.” The rest of the cast consisted only of Louise Carlyle and Eddie Chappell. The original Girl Crazy by George and Ira Gershwin opened at the Alvin Theatre in New York in October 1930, and played for only 272 performances. First LP release: January 1952.
