The stage adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice was a musical vision of the polite but turbulent romance between Miss Elizabeth Bennet (Polly Bergen) and Mister Fitzwilliam Darcy (Farley Granger), with Hermione Gingold adding the acid authority of Mrs. Bennet. But by remaining too faithful to the spirit of his model, author Abe Burrows couldn’t remove its prevalent stiffness. Nor did the score (Robert Goldman, Glenn Paxton, and George Weiss) manage to attract, despite some truly beautiful melodies. With Phyllis Newman, James Mitchell, and Christopher Hewett also in the cast, the show opened at the Alvin Theatre in March 1959 for a run of 84 performances. First LP release: April 1959.
