Considered a disappointment during its first run in 1975 (despite 936 performances), this quirky but brilliant show returned to the Broadway boards in November 1996 for a run that is still going strong after nearly fifteen years. Ann Reinking initially assumed Gwen Verdon’s role, and Bebe Neuwirth took over for Chita Rivera while James Naughton played Billy Flynn the sleazy lawyer. Joel Grey added his name as Roxie’s “Mr. Cellophane” husband. A long and varied queue of name performers have appeared in the revival since the start of its now six thousand-odd performances, proving once and for all that it is a masterpiece, unrecognized during its original run.
