Camelot 1960
Frederic Loewe and Alan Jay Lerner’s treatment of T.H. White’s The Once and Future King, about the love triangle between King Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot, followed the huge success of My Fair Lady by more than four years. Opening at Broadway’s Majestic Theatre in December 1960, it never reached the heights of that previous hit, but did run for 873 performances, largely on the star power of Richard Burton as Arthur, Julie Andrews as Guinevere, and Robert Goulet as the King’s best knight. As it came just a month after John F. Kennedy’s election to the presidency, and was known to be Kennedy’s favorite show, it epitomized all that was glamorous about his “brief, shining moment.” First LP release: December 1960
