The characters in Cole Porter’s madcap masterpiece include a former evangelist turned hostess, a pair of star-crossed lovebirds, and a meek gangster on the lam, all on board a luxury liner sailing to England. With a nonsensical but hilarious script by Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse, aided and abetted by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, it premiered in November 1934 and was recognized as the quintessential ’30s musical, making a star of Ethel Merman as Reno Sweeney. Eileen Rodgers stepped boldly into Merman’s shoes in this May 1962 revival with Hal Linden, Mickey Deems, Kenneth Mars and Barbara Lang.. The show opened at the off-Broadway Orpheum Theatre, where it played 239 performances. First LP release: August 1962.
