Stephen Sondheim’s fabulous 1964 flop received the royal treatment some 30 years later in an all-star one-night performance at Carnegie Hall on April 8, 1995. Chief of its luminaries was Angela Lansbury, who had created the role of Cora in the original, serving as the congenial narrator. Madeline Kahn played Cora that evening. Also on hand were Bernadette Peters, Scott Bakula, and Ken Page, Walter Bobbie, Chip Zien, Evan Pappas, Harolyn Blackwell, Harvey Evans, Marin Mazzie, and Lisa Lockwood. Paul Gemignani and The American Theatre Orchestra demonstrated that Sondheim’s score certainly ranked among his most impressive achievements. Released July 1995.
