The old 1933 Warner Brothers screen musical with songs by Harry Warren and Al Dubin finally made it to Broadway in August 1980 at the Winter Garden. This lavish production starred Jerry Orbach, Tammy Grimes, Lee Roy Reams, and Wanda Richert (in the role played by Ruby Keeler in the movie). This was the last show directed by Gower Champion, who died the day of the premiere. Three thousand four hundred eighty-six performances proved that fifty-year-old songs could still draw a crowd. First LP release November 1980.
