The 1956 film The Rainmaker served as the model for this tuneful musical, with a book by N. Richard Nash based on his original play and screenplay. It opened at the Broadhurst in October 1963 with Robert Horton as a con man posing as a rainmaker, Inga Swenson as the spinster who falls for him, and Stephen Douglass as the Sheriff. The songs were by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt in their first follow-up to The Fantasticks, the dance numbers were staged by the legendary Agnes de Mille, and the producer was “the abominable showman” David Merrick. The show closed after a modest run of 330 performances. Lesley [Ann] Warren, in her first major role, made a name for herself in the show-stopper, “Little Red Hat.” First LP release: December 1963.
